The Asia Pacific Law Club was established in 1985 to educate members on
legal, business, political and social issues of Pacific Rim countries and
to provide a forum for students to meet other students and lawyers who
share an interest in the Pacific Rim. Our membership has increased to a
record 85 students and as a result of this year's newly established
corporate membership program, we have obtained 180 lawyer members from 14
law firms.
Our largest ever event was the second annual forum on the legal
profession and the Pacific Rim. Those in attendance had the
opportunity to listen to lawyer, business people and professors discuss
the practical legal aspects and strategies of dealing with Asian clients.
Other highlights included guest lectures such as Dr. Graeme D.
MacDonald, President and CEO of the Asia Pacific Foundation; Mr. Robert Wenman, MP; and Mr. Nelson Tsui of Lang, Michener, Lawrence and Shaw.
Members also attended a variety of conferences and seminars including
the "Offshore Investment and business immigration Seminar", the
"Conference on Modern Japan" and special Board of Trade seminars and
lectures.
Receptions and seminars at law firms were also a big hit (especially
with our members in second year!) Members were able to "network" (or
should I say brown nose) with lawyers from Boughton Peterson Yang
Anderson, Freeman & Company, and Lawson Lundell, Lawson & McIntosh.
Our first ever Newsletter Editor was able to put out an informative and
interesting bi-semester newsletter which increased the awareness of our
club with faculty and the local profession (mmmmn?)
Our social/sports events included the "Student-Lawyer Golf Tournament",
"Meet-the-Members Dinner", a ski-trip, "Members Karoke Party", weekly
walleyball and the "End-of-the-Year Dinner".
Working committees such as Corporate Relations Committee were
established to encourage more involvement in the planning and
organization of events and to help meet the demands of our expanded
activities, programs, and increased membership.
This year has been a very active and successful year and I would like
to thank the executive, committee members and other volunteers for your
ideas, time, energy and most of all your inspiration.
