University of British Columbia Law Class of 1991

CANDIDA'S

A little bit of java never hurt anyone, nor a smile from Candida.  Like mom away from home.

I do believe each one of us spent more time in Candida's Taverna than anywhere else in the law school.  And why not?  Candida's coffee was brutal, exactly what a budding young law student needs.

Many a friendship was struck-up around one of those off balanced tables.  Without a doubt some of us

learned more about the "law" in that room as well.  Or, in some instances, what we really did not know.  You leave a lecture pretty confident that you understood the material only to have someone at Candida's Taverna recount a totally different understanding of that very lecture.  Oh well, you can't win them all.

Although lunch options were not abundant at Candida's (pita pockets, bagels, assorted bread sandwiches, and the odd soup or Chili), the real Candida herself seemed to make lunch special.  How she remembered all our names is a mystery.  Perhaps she should have taken my Farqhuar Trust exam with its 300 odd cases.  I know I and many other students will miss her smile and touch.

What I personally won't miss is the obnoxious video and electronic pinball games.  Yes, yes, yes, I am aware that there is a segment of our class that will miss those very games, and whose memories of Candida's surround such things.

One last thing about Candida's Taverna should not be forgotten.  It was the setting for many a memorable Beer-Up.  I know each one of us has our own personal favorite night.
