I am sure that I, like most past presidents of the Law Students
Association, would like to think that our year was the best.
There are a few things from our year that shine out above the rest. The
first is that 52% of the students in the law school in our year were
women. There have been some big changes for the better to the curriculum
in the law school because of some of the students and the faculty working
very hard to see those changes become a reality.
As well, during our year there was a minor controversy around racism that
flared up as a result of the engineers news letter and racist material
showing up in the mail boxes of the legal clinic. Dean Burns acted very
quickly by issuing a statement to the student body and the public that
that kind of attitude and behavior would not be tolerated at the law
school.

I am very proud of the way that the law school as a whole dealt with the
controversy that I brought into the law school as a result of my being out
at OKA during the summer and the fall. Yes, there were people on both
sides of the issue, but we talked about it, and we worked past the
controversy, not without pain, but we got through it. I hope we will carry
what we learnt from our experience, out into the world with us and use it.
We are the future leaders and if we can draw on that experience the world
will be a better place to live.
I hope that the students that follow us will be able to build a better
school and world on the foundation that our year has left behind, as we
ourselves were able to build on the years before us.
Thank-you,
Jennie Jack. |
