The Legal Brief: The Class of '91
The Facts: The summer between second and third year was critical
to many of us. Some of us had our first opportunity to work in a law
office. Not only did we get a chance to impress our parents and
non-law friends, we got to check out if we liked the "fit" of working in a
legal environment. Almost all of went through the whirlwind of
articling interviews as part of the Match Program. By what seemed a
miracle to some, over 80% of us knew which firm we would eventually
article with when we finished law school.
In third year we seemed much more relaxed and less concerned about that
damn bell curve. Class choices were dictated more by interest then
what was recommended or would get us a decent grade. Instead of
looking at every member of the class as competition we began to share
information and help classmates beyond our little group. Our focus
seemed to be on Graduation and the outside world.
Pre-grad parties, Grad Banquet, Convocation, and informal Grad-dinners
with our families took a lot of our time and energy. As well, the
OKA Crisis and the "Gulf War" both demanded our attention. Our LSA
President was directly involved in the OKA Crisis and continued to be
involved throughout the academic year. As well, many of us were
concerned about friends and family living in the Gulf or sent to the Gulf
to represent Canada. Third year went by even faster than second
year.
